Inside Yourself (a 60's Eulogy)

I look into your eyes
and I see they've changed
the girl I used to love has died
and you're all that remains
I don't know what went wrong
and I'm not quite sure
how to resurrect the vague ideals
that once were worth fighting for

I don't know where to turn
I used to turn to you
but now there's no one to believe
and nothing to come true
I search in vain to find
another cause
I tried to chase the "American dream"
but a dream is all it was

You can blame your childhood
you can blame the system
you can blame it all on someone else
but it all comes down to
courage and conviction
perhaps you better look inside yourself

Sometimes I catch a glimpse
when your composure slips
of days when love played in our hearts
and freedom on our lips
I smell the incense burn
and I feel the love
this hungry world feeds on our hearts
like vultures on a dove

You can say it was disco, Watergate and Nixon
designer jeans and teens in wide lapels
still it all comes down to courage and conviction
perhaps you better look inside yourself

You can blame your childhood
you can play the victim
you can lay it all on someone else
still it all comes down to
these simple words of wisdom
perhaps you better look inside yourself
